Tench are a fish of the carp family, native to the UK and Europe. They grow to about 30-40cm/12-16" and their fins are large and strong, and the tail is broad. The Tench has very small scales and is very slimy. Its eyes are also very small. It has a downward pointing mouth with two small barbels.

The normal coloured Tench is usually dark green with red eyes and sometimes with a yellow underside. The fins may be dark grey in large ones. Small ones may be lighter coloured and are often a mossy green colour. The Golden Tench is golden yellow, sometimes with dark markings on the back and often with dark brown eyes.

Tench are sometimes sold as 'pond cleaners'. Although they may eat leftover food, they will not remove waste or eat mud or blanketweed. No fish will clean your pond.

Tench will eat any normal pond fish food, but they mainly feed at the bottom of the pond so it is recommended that they are fed a sinking pellet.

Water quality is the main key to keeping all fish and regular checks of your 3 pond water parameters, Ammonia, Nitrite and pH, are therefore very important.
