The History of Chagoi: Chagoi in Nishikigoi originated from Magoi. Cha means tea. It can also mean brown, or honey or mustard colour. Thus a chagoi is a tea-coloured, non-metallic, single colour koi. As well as the brownish types of Chagoi, there are greenish types - known as Midori Chagoi and blue-grey types known as Soragoi. Because Chagoi grow very fast they quickly become King of the pond. Its huge appetite makes it round and fat. They swim with great presence and are very friendly, making them a popular pet for all the family.
Chagoi Identification: Chagoi look like wild-coloured carp during their first year. After wintering, they start to become tea-coloured and at the end of their second summer they are fully coloured. Many chagoi have dark ends to their body scales. This developes into a net-like, reticulate pattern which does not enhance colour but rather makes the chagoi more somber.
